How Yoga helped me live a Happier Life

Feeling uninspired and bored with life, maybe even a little depressed, I knew something needed to change. I didn’t want to feel like this anymore. I knew I could feel better I just had to do something, get active, and be consistent with it.

Sometimes you are your own worst enemy when it comes to putting (or not putting) in the work to make your situation better.

It was April 2014 when I decided I was going to start exercising more and get in a better mind space. Initially, I started out with the goal of doing splits which then turned me to yoga.

I wanted to challenge myself, so I did. Committing to about 5-6 days a week, I started warming up with a mix of pilates/yoga based HIIT workouts. The first 2 weeks were brutal. Going from never working out to working out almost every day for 30 minutes to an hour, was not an easy task. If I wasn’t so damn bored with my life I probably wouldn’t have continued. But I forced myself to give it at least 2 weeks in order to get into the habit.

I slowly started switching over to mostly yoga workouts and started following a ton of yogis on Instagram. After about 2-3 weeks, I realized I was actually really enjoying my new routine.

I noticed how I was started to feel happier throughout the day.

I was less stressed and anxious, and less worried about things I couldn’t change. I had never really made my fitness or myself/mental health a priority daily like that. The benefits were amazing. I was happier and mentally and physically in better shape than I had been in a long time.

This also made me want to start making healthier choices over all in my life. I started to be more conscious of what I was eating and how I was feeling mentally. I made sure I listened to my body and what it needed. It made me want to make other areas of my life better as well.

It helped me to stop overthinking things

And start putting myself and happiness above others. I really believe the benefits just slowly trickled into other areas of my life.

It all started with working out and getting out of my head for at least 30 minutes to an hour a day. Even if it’s not yoga, I encourage you to take time for yourself every day to workout in some way. It could change your life.
